How do I start training to be a personal trainer?

Personal training can be a fun, satisfying, and rewarding career that can allow you to do what you love, and even be your own boss! To get started, there are plenty of flexible and affordable training options available.

Do I need a qualification?

To become a personal trainer in Australia, you will need a Certificate IV in Fitness. Because a qualification is required, it is important to check out your options and decide which qualification best suits you and your needs. You can also study a Certificate III or Certificate IV online!

At the Australian College of Fitness and Personal Training, a Certificate III in Fitness will give you the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to become a group exercise or gym instructor.

But if you’ve got your sights set on becoming a personal trainer, the Certificate IV in Fitness is for you! This course will teach you how to instruct group and individual personal training programs as well as how to establish legal and risk management requirements for small businesses.

You can also study the Fast Track Certificate IV in Fitness to get both your Certificate III and Certificate IV in one!

What will I learn?

While some units throughout the courses overlap, each course will teach you different things. The Certificate III is focused on teaching the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to provide exercise, fitness, and nutrition instruction and advice to groups. The Certificate IV will provide the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to be a personal trainer for both individuals and groups, including children and adolescents.

But if you want to get the most out of your course, the Fast Track Certificate IV in Fitness will give you all the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to:

  • Instruct exercise to young people, adults, and elderly people
  • Establish and maintain professional practice for fitness instruction
  • Assess client movement and provide advice on fitness and exercise
  • Establish legal and risk management requirements for new business ventures
  • Research and develop business plans
  • Develop and instruct strength conditioning programs

And more!

How long is the course?

All our courses at ACFPT are super flexible! The Certificate III in Fitness and Certificate IV in Fitness both have durations of 12 months, with the option to extend the course another six months if you need extra time.
The Fast Track Certificate IV in Fitness has a duration of 18 months, with the option to either finish early, or add an extra six months if you need more time.
