Maintaining boundaries in the workplace
Hey Learners,
As you progress through your studies and prepare to start your placement and join the workforce, it’s important to consider not just what you do at work, but also how you carry yourself in a work environment. One big part of being a great professional is learning how to maintain appropriate boundaries without crossing any lines—a key part of any industry.
Professional boundaries are basically the rules of thumb for how to act and interact respectfully with colleagues, clients, and supervisors. Think of them as invisible lines that help keep things professional, safe, and fair for everyone involved. Industries can vary slightly but maintaining these boundaries are key to building trust and staying respected in your role.
Below are some tips to uphold professional boundaries:
- Have communication etiquette: keep conversations work-related, especially in formal settings or digital platforms provided by the employer (e.g., Teams or Zoom). Avoid sharing overly personal details unless necessary and/or appropriate
- Respect personal space and time: understand the difference between building rapport and being invasive, both physically and/or digitally. Remain mindful of others’ availability outside of working hours
- Practice social media caution: think carefully before connecting with co-workers, managers, or clients on personal social media accounts. When relevant always maintain a professional online presence
- Don’t take things too personally: stay objective in your role, particularly when dealing with sensitive situations or difficult clients as being overly emotionally involved can blur and affect your judgment
- Know your role: be clear on your responsibilities and avoid going beyond your authority unless guided by a supervisor
Maintaining boundaries doesn’t mean you have to be cold or distant, but means showing professionalism while still being approachable and collaborative.
If you’re currently undertaking placements, take note on how professionals around you are managing their work dynamics. Sometimes the best lessons aren’t in textbooks, they come from watching and learning from those already in the field.
Try putting these tips into practice as you continue your professional journey.
Have a great Friday!
