What to consider in a job offer
Dear Learners,
Last week, we covered tips for landing a job after finishing your course. This week, we’re continuing the conversation and covering job offers. Once you receive a job offer, the next step is deciding whether it’s the right fit.
Receiving a job offer is an exciting milestone, but you should consider more than just the pay. It’s normal to feel eager—or even pressured—to say ‘yes’ straight away. Accepting the first offer without careful consideration can lead to a job that doesn’t fully support your professional or personal priorities. Take the time to examine the offer, as this will help you decide whether the role truly supports your goals, values, and long-term direction.
Before you accept a job offer, consider the following:
- Salary and benefits: look beyond the base pay. Does the offer include training, superannuation, leave entitlements, or other perks such as discounted memberships?
- Responsibilities: check that the role matches your skills, qualifications, and career goals. Consider whether the role offers meaningful challenges and opportunities to grow.
- Work–life balance: assess how the position fits with your lifestyle and personal commitments. Consider the expected working hours, commute or location, and any options for flexibility.
- Culture and values: research the company. Is it a place where you’ll feel comfortable, supported, and motivated?
- Future growth: think about long-term opportunities. Is there potential for advancement and skill development?
Even if you’re eager to start working, it is important to reflect on the offer and make an informed decision. So, keep “applying” yourself and stay confident.
Happy Friday! The right opportunity could be just around the corner.
