Dear Learners,

Self-determination is about making your own choices and setting goals that reflect your personal values and aspirations. Your success in both your studies and career begins with believing in your ability to shape your own future.
Exercise professionals guide, support, and collaborate with clients to help them achieve their fitness goals. In your role, you can work with your clients to identify and implement solutions that encourage motivation and support them to make positive behaviour changes.
It is important to satisfy the following psychological needs when strengthening self-determination:
- Autonomy: feeling in control of your own behaviours and goals is a key element of self-determination. You can foster this by allowing clients the opportunity to have a say in their exercise program
- Competence: involves mastering and feeling confident in your abilities. Clients are more likely to take steps towards achieving their goals when they believe they have the skills necessary for success
- Connection: all people need to feel connected to others and experience a sense of belonging. As an exercise professional, your relationship with your clients can boost their motivation towards meeting their fitness goals.
Remember, you are the key driver of your progress. By taking initiative and staying committed, you’re not just completing a course, but building a future that reflects your goals and determination.
