Can you make good money as a personal trainer?
There are a number of factors that influence how much money you can make as a personal trainer, including your level of experience, where you are employed and how many hours you choose to work.
Is there a demand for personal trainers in Australia?
The good news is that the fitness industry is a growing one. The Australian public are more health-conscious than ever, and social media creates a viable way for personal trainers to market their services and make money.
Seek.com predicts that the demand for personal trainers and fitness instructors will grow by 9.8% in the next five years. The Australian Government’s Labour Market Insights (LMI) predicts it will continue trending upwards over the next three years, with around 3,600 new job openings a year and below-average unemployment overall.
According to the LMI, the level of education held by most people employed as fitness instructors is a Certificate III/IV (34.4%). Attaining this level of qualification is an essential first step in starting a career in fitness.
How much money does a personal trainer make on average?
The average salary of a personal trainer can vary greatly depending on their experience, reputation, area of work, and the hours they choose to work.
An entry level personal trainer can expect to make around $50,000/year working full time, whereas someone with more experience (8+ years) will typically earn upwards of $80,000/year.
Personal trainers can also choose part-time work and often have the option to work flexible hours, which can be a great benefit for those who want a greater work/life balance, or for those who want time to grow their personal training business as their own boss.
Is it better for PTs to work privately or in a gym/fitness centre?
Personal trainers typically work with clients one-on-one or in small groups.
Most work in gyms, fitness centres and sports complexes and meet their clients at these locations.
However, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic, demand has soared for private personal trainers who operate online, in the client’s home or in public spaces such as parks. However, be aware that in order to work effectively with clients you may need to work early mornings or nights in order to accommodate their needs.
Be aware that developing your business and acquiring clients is something that can take time. Most personal trainers at the beginning of their career will find it valuable to gain experience in a gym or fitness centre setting.
How do I get started as a personal trainer?
The first step to becoming a personal trainer is to become certified.
In Australia, the minimum qualification needed for a career in fitness is a Certificate III in Fitness. The level of education you need to attain may also depend on the specific field you are interested in, or the requirements of an individual organisation.
To be certified as a personal trainer, you will need to undertake the Certificate IV in Fitness, which will allow you to develop the skills and knowledge needed to start your career.
To save time and kickstart your career, you attain both qualifications sooner with the Fast Track Certificate IV in Fitness.
