Can I study a personal training course online?
If you’re looking to get accredited as a personal trainer but don’t have room in your schedule for in-person classes, don’t fret! There are affordable, self-paced study options available that are delivered entirely through online learning.
How do I know if an online course is legitimate?
To ensure that your time and money is wisely spent on a recognised qualification, you need to ensure that you choose to study an accredited course through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
The Australian Government manages training.gov.au, a database of all nationally recognised training and registered training organisations.
You can search for the course provider using their Registered Training Organisation Number to ensure that the study you undertake is recognised and meets industry standards.
What qualification should I study?
If you’re looking to study a Personal Trainer course online and get involved in the fitness industry, there are a few different options.
At a minimum, a Certificate III in Fitness is required to work as a group exercise instructor or gym instructor.
But if you’ve got your sights set on becoming a personal trainer, you’ll need to hold a Certificate IV in Fitness.
The Certificate III in Fitness is a prerequisite for this qualification, so if you’re just starting your study journey, you can save time and earn both certificates through a recognised Fast Track Certificate IV in Fitness.
What will I learn in a fitness course?
These courses are designed to provide you with critical skills to work safely and effectively with a diverse range of people in the fitness industry.
Completing a Certificate IV in Fitness will give you the skills to:
- Lead group fitness sessions and develop individual training programs
- Navigate legal and risk management requirements for small business, specifically as a personal trainer or fitness instructor
- Work safely with clients to support their functional movement and capacity.

Is it cheaper to study online?
Course fees vary between RTOs, but generally, you can save a lot of money by choosing to study through an online provider. As an online-only RTO, the Australian College of Fitness and Personal Training (ACFPT) can offer the same qualifications at a far lower cost than other training organisations.
What about work placement?
Vocational placement is crucial to developing your skills and gaining vital real-world experience early on in your career. This must be completed in-person and in a real working environment.
However, you can commence placement once you’ve completed at least the first six units of your course, and continue to study while you learn on the job.
Before deciding on your placement, ensure you check the requirements for your course, including the minimum hours and approved workplaces.
