7 DAY SUPPORT

Do the right thing

Hey Learners,

Life rarely offers us clear-cut decisions. The decisions you make, even the tough ones, play a big role in shaping your path and character. How you navigate those moments reveals your values and integrity, equipping you with an important skill that will support you throughout your career.

Workplace ethics aren’t always black and white. At times, the “right” decision isn’t always obvious. For example, imagine working with a client who confides in you that they’ve started taking a performance-enhancing supplement recommended by a friend. They insist it’s natural and feel it gives them an edge, but you know your role includes promoting safe, honest, and fair practices.

Now you’re faced with a dilemma: Do you address it? Or do you allow them the right to make their own decisions?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but there is a framework you can use to help decide:

  • Assess the risk: is the practice unsafe or potentially harmful?
  • Review policies: does your organisation require disclosure?
  • Respect boundaries: stay within your scope of practice and avoid giving medical advice
  • Document conversations: keep track of any discussions for accountability and clarity
  • Refer when needed: direct clients to qualified professionals like registered dietitians or physicians if necessary
  • Know when to escalate: if the supplement is illegal, dangerous, or being promoted to others, you may have to report to a supervisor as part of your ethical duty

Doing the right thing is not always the easiest path, but it is always the most rewarding. By building your ethical awareness now, you can set yourself up for a successful and positive career.

Happy Friday!
